Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration
The Mid-Autumn Festival is an important traditional holiday in China, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. Every year, schools organize celebratory events for young children to learn about the festival through engaging dramas, introducing them to traditional festive foods and celebratory activities. They also get to experience the joy of carrying and admiring beautifully crafted lanterns in the dark. The children come together to enjoy a family reunion dinner and share festive treats, experiencing the joy of family reunion during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Lunar New Year Celebration
The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, is one of the four major traditional festivals celebrated by the Han Chinese. Each year, we invite parent volunteers to participate in organizing a festive event to celebrate the Lunar New Year, allowing everyone to enjoy the joyous moments of this important holiday. On this day, the children not only experience the lively atmosphere of the Lunar New Year stalls but also have the opportunity to participate in lion dances and drum performances. They also get to taste the auspicious “Eight Treasure” rice pudding, symbolizing unity, health, and peace, while exchanging blessings to welcome the beginning of the new year.
Chinese Cultural Activities in the Classroom
In our school, various Chinese cultural elements are incorporated into different themed activities in each class, allowing children to become familiar with different aspects of Chinese culture and art. Through exploration and hands-on experiences, they appreciate the historical value and unique features of Chinese culture, thus promoting the inheritance of traditional culture. Some of the learning activities include: Paper Cutting, Mask Painting, Blue and White Porcelain Art, Chinese Calligraphy, Shadow Puppetry, Traditional Chinese music Appreciation and Chinese Dance.
Chinese Cultural Showcase
Our school invites professional teams to perform face-changing (biàn liǎn) for the children. In addition to learning about the history and different facial mask styles, the children are thrilled and engaged as they witness the performance. They also have the opportunity to interact closely with the master performer, creating an immersive experience.
In addition to the face-changing performance, the cultural showcase includes various booth activities that embody traditional Chinese culture. These activities include rainbow calligraphy (cǎi hóng shū fǎ), diabolo (chē líng), making paddle drums (bō làng gǔ), and windmill crafts. These activities allow the children to experience and appreciate the unique artistic expressions of Chinese culture.
To conclude the cultural showcase, the children enjoy a special Chinese lunch, where they have the chance to taste traditional Chinese Han ethnic cuisine, such as dumplings (jiǎo zi), which are a characteristic and popular food in China.
The Chinese cultural showcase provides an immersive and enriching experience for the children, allowing them to explore and celebrate the diverse elements of Chinese culture in a fun and interactive manner.
